Relocating the NBN Termination for Centralised Network Distribution

When it comes to high-performance home networking, location and structure matter.

For this project in Research VIC, the goal was to improve Wi-Fi reliability, increase internal network performance and future-proof the home’s communications infrastructure.

The first step was relocating the existing NBN termination point and modem/router equipment into a central communications cupboard. Centralising the network core improves signal distribution, simplifies cable management and allows for proper structured data routing throughout the property.

We extended the coaxial connection, re-terminated as required and reinstated services to ensure continuity before progressing to the network core upgrade.

Installing a UniFi Network Core: UCG-Max & PoE Switching

With the NBN correctly positioned, we supplied and installed a Ubiquiti UniFi UCG-Max Cloud Gateway to serve as the central routing and security appliance.

The installation also included a UniFi PoE switch (USW-FLEX-2.5G-8-POE), allowing clean power and data delivery to all access points without relying on individual injectors.

All equipment was mounted neatly within the communications cupboard with:

• Structured patching
• Clean cable management
• Serviceable layout
• Adequate airflow
• Logical topology design

Structured CAT6 Cabling to UniFi U7 Pro Access Points

To eliminate weak signal zones and inconsistent coverage, we installed new CAT6 structured data cabling from the communications cupboard to four strategically selected wireless access point locations.

Each run was:

• Installed via accessible cavities and underfloor spaces
• Properly secured and supported
• Terminated to data modules
• Tested for integrity and performance

The home now operates on a properly distributed access point model using Ubiquiti UniFi U7 Pro access points, delivering:

• Improved roaming performance
• Reduced latency
• Higher throughput
• Stable coverage across all zones

For larger homes, relying on a single consumer-grade router simply isn’t sufficient. Distributed Wi-Fi with controller-managed access points is the professional standard.

UniFi Commissioning & Network Configuration

We commissioned the UniFi environment in collaboration with the client’s IT provider, ensuring seamless adoption into the UniFi controller portal.

Configuration included:

• Device adoption
• Network segmentation setup (where applicable)
• SSID configuration
• Performance validation
• Device verification

All key services including AV equipment, TV distribution and IP-based devices such as CCTV were reconnected and tested to confirm full operational status.
