UniFi WiFi & Network Upgrade in Montmorency | Data Rack & Coverage Optimisation
UniFi WiFi and Network Upgrade in Montmorency, VIC
Overview: Residential UniFi Network Optimisation
Cable & Connect recently completed a full network, WiFi and audio optimisation project at a residential property in Montmorency, Victoria. The brief was to improve overall performance, reliability and coverage across the home using enterprise-grade Ubiquiti UniFi equipment, while also cleaning up and consolidating the existing data rack.
This project involved verifying the existing network infrastructure, upgrading outdated components, and strategically repositioning wireless access points to eliminate dead spots and improve roaming throughout the property.
Network Testing, Labelling and Rack Consolidation
Our team began by testing and verifying all existing CAT6 data points, ensuring each connection was functioning correctly. Network points were labelled and documented for clarity and future servicing.
The existing data rack was then reconfigured to improve organisation, airflow and serviceability. A new 24-port network switch was supplied and installed, allowing all active network ports to be consolidated into a single, clean switching solution. Minor re-terminations were completed where required to restore optimal connectivity.
Hard-Wired Audio Integration with Sonos
To improve reliability and performance, all Sonos amplifiers located within the rack were hard-wired directly into the network. The lounge room Sonos soundbar was also connected via an existing data point and fully commissioned into the client’s Sonos app, providing seamless control and improved stability compared to wireless-only connections.
UniFi WiFi Upgrade with U7 Pro Access Points
The existing UniFi Lite wireless access points were found to be insufficient for the home’s layout and usage requirements. These were removed and replaced with UniFi U7 Pro access points, delivering a significant uplift in speed, roaming performance and overall WiFi reliability.
Downstairs WiFi
One UniFi U7 Pro access point was installed in the stair cupboard, mounted facing downward to improve signal spread across the ground-floor circulation and living areas. A new concealed CAT6 cable was run neatly back to the rack using square conduit.
Upstairs WiFi
An existing network cable was re-routed to the upstairs ceiling space, where a second UniFi U7 Pro access point was installed in a central location to maximise coverage across bedrooms and study areas.
Once installed, WiFi performance was tested throughout the home. Where required, existing access points can be redeployed or additional UniFi units added to further strengthen coverage.
Why Hard-Wired UniFi Systems Perform Better
This property benefits from structured CAT6 cabling, allowing all UniFi access points to be hard-wired back to the rack. This eliminates the performance losses often seen with WiFi extenders or wireless backhaul systems and ensures consistent, high-bandwidth communication across the network.
The Result
The completed upgrade delivered:
Faster and more reliable WiFi throughout the home
Improved roaming between access points
A clean, organised and future-ready data rack
Stable, hard-wired network and audio performance
