When the Electrical Becomes Part of the Design
Not every electrical installation is supposed to disappear into the walls.
For this unique man cave and garage project in Kew, the electrical installation needed to become part of the character of the finished space.
With soaring timber ceilings, exposed beams, a wood-burning fireplace, heritage finishes and a beautifully detailed interior, standard modern electrical accessories simply weren't going to suit.
Cable & Connect was engaged to complete a custom electrical installation incorporating heritage-style switches and power points, feature lighting and exposed copper conduit.
It turned into one of those projects that was considerably more fiddly than it might appear in the finished photos, but that's also what made the final result so satisfying.
Exposed Copper Conduit With Nowhere to Hide
One of the standout features of this project was the exposed copper conduit.
Rather than concealing the electrical pathways, the copper was deliberately incorporated into the design.
The conduit travels across the structure and down the posts before connecting with the electrical fittings, creating an industrial-meets-heritage finish that complements the surrounding timber and darker structural elements.
When services are exposed like this, the quality of the installation becomes particularly important.
Every run, bend, fixing and transition is visible, meaning careful planning and attention to detail are essential.
Heritage Switches and Power Points
The smaller details mattered just as much.
Heritage-style switches and power points were selected to complement the overall aesthetic rather than introducing modern accessories that would look out of place against the traditional finishes.
It's a great example of why electrical planning should form part of the overall design process during a renovation.
Switches, outlets, lighting and even the way cables are routed can either disappear into a space or become intentional design features.
For this project, they were very much intended to be seen.
Feature Lighting Under a Beautiful Timber Ceiling
Inside, the existing timber-lined ceiling and exposed beams provided an incredible backdrop for the new lighting.
Large heritage-inspired pendant lights were suspended throughout the room, providing practical illumination while reinforcing the character of the space.
Combined with the ceiling fan, wall lighting, exposed timber and wood-burning fireplace, the completed room has a warm and distinctive feel that couldn't have been achieved with a generic electrical fit-out.
Tricky, Fiddly and Worth the Effort
Custom electrical projects often require considerably more planning and patience than standard installations.
Working around existing structural features, achieving clean exposed conduit runs and positioning accessories so they complement the architecture all add complexity.
This Kew man cave was certainly one of those tricky and fiddly projects.
But the finished result made the extra effort worthwhile.
Rather than the electrical installation competing with the character of the room, it became part of it.
