What Your Strata Switchboard Shouldn't Look Like: Upgrading Common Area Electrical Safety in Murrumbeena
Strata Switchboard Upgrade in Murrumbeena Improves Common Area Safety
Replacing an Ageing Fuse Board with a Modern RCBO-Protected Switchboard
Older apartment buildings and strata complexes often still rely on electrical switchboards fitted with outdated ceramic fuses and ageing equipment. While these systems may still function, they often lack the level of electrical protection, reliability and ease of maintenance expected in modern installations.
Cable & Connect Pty Ltd recently completed a public light and power switchboard upgrade for a strata property in Murrumbeena, replacing an ageing switchboard that had reached the end of its serviceable life.
A Switchboard That Had Seen Better Days
The original common area switchboard contained an older Federal fuse assembly, outdated protective devices and an ageing lighting timer. Although operational, the equipment offered limited protection compared to modern switchboard technology and made future maintenance more difficult.
If your common property switchboard still resembles older fuse boards with ceramic fuses and ageing breakers, it may be worth arranging a professional assessment.
Modern Protection for Common Area Circuits
Our electricians safely isolated the existing installation before removing the redundant switchboard equipment and installing a new surface-mounted enclosure.
The new switchboard included:
New main switch
Two individually protected RCBO safety switches
New analogue lighting timer
Retention and reconnection of the existing pneumatic manual override switches
New circuit identification labels
Comprehensive electrical testing
Certificate of Electrical Safety upon completion
Using individual RCBO protection provides combined overload, short circuit and residual current protection for each circuit, helping improve both electrical safety and fault isolation.
Restoring Reliable Common Area Lighting
As part of the project, we replaced the existing lighting timer controlling the common area lighting.
The new analogue timer restores automatic operation while retaining the building's existing manual override switches, allowing residents and maintenance personnel to continue operating the lighting when required without changing how the system functions.
Why Strata Switchboard Upgrades Matter
For Owners Corporations, Body Corporates and Strata Managers, common property electrical infrastructure is often overlooked until faults begin occurring.
Upgrading ageing switchboards can provide benefits including:
Improved electrical safety
Modern circuit protection
Easier future maintenance
Clearer circuit identification
Greater reliability of common area services
Compliance with current installation standards for new electrical work
