Eight Custom-Built Mobile AV Systems That Are Still in Daily Use Six Years Later
When Video Conferencing Became Essential
2020 changed the way workplaces communicated.
Almost overnight, organisations across Melbourne needed reliable ways for their teams to communicate without everyone being physically located in the same room.
For Cable & Connect, that brought a significant increase in demand for video conferencing and commercial AV solutions.
One project from this period that we're particularly proud of was our work with YSAS, designing and building a fleet of mobile video conferencing systems to help their teams communicate across multiple sites.
Designing a Practical Video Conferencing Solution
YSAS needed more than simply a television with a camera attached.
The solution needed to be practical, reliable and suitable for regular use by different teams across their organisation.
Cable & Connect designed and built eight mobile video conferencing trolleys, integrating the displays, cameras, audio, conferencing equipment and associated hardware into mobile systems.
The trolley design meant the equipment wasn't permanently tied to a single meeting room. Teams could position the systems where they were needed while still having the technology required for effective communication.
As the photos from the project show, considerable thought also went into the back of each system.
Mounting hardware, cabling and AV components were incorporated into the trolley rather than leaving users with a collection of separate equipment to connect whenever they needed to hold a meeting.
Eight Systems Delivered Across YSAS Sites
Once designed and built, Cable & Connect delivered eight systems for use across YSAS locations.
At a time when the ability to communicate remotely had suddenly become incredibly important, these systems gave teams a practical way to remain connected across their different sites.
Technology has naturally changed considerably since 2020.
The systems themselves have undergone several iterations and upgrades over the years as requirements and technology have evolved.
But six years later, there's something we're particularly proud to be able to say:

Good AV Isn't Just About the Latest Technology
Commercial AV is often associated with having the newest screens, cameras or conferencing equipment.
But good AV design is about much more than the individual products.
It's about understanding how people will actually use a system and designing something that is practical, maintainable and capable of adapting as technology changes.
The YSAS video conferencing trolleys are a great example.
The technology has evolved since we first built them in 2020, but the fundamental solution has remained useful. Instead of becoming obsolete after a couple of years, the systems have been able to evolve alongside the organisation.
